Make.com vs Zapier vs n8n: Which Automation Tool Should You Pick?

The Three Tools Everyone Considers

If you've decided to automate your ecommerce store, you've almost certainly narrowed your choice to three tools: Make.com, Zapier, and n8n. These are the heavyweights, and for good reason—they connect to virtually every app your store uses and let you build workflows without writing code.

But here's the problem: every comparison article online reads like a feature checklist with no opinion. That's not helpful when you're staring at three pricing pages trying to decide where to spend your next 40 hours learning a tool. After 13+ years of running real ecommerce stores and building hundreds of automations across all three platforms, I'm going to give you a straight answer instead of a spreadsheet.

Zapier — The Easiest to Start, The First to Outgrow

Zapier is the household name of automation, and it earned that reputation by being genuinely the simplest tool to pick up. If you've never built an automation in your life, Zapier is where you'll feel comfortable fastest.

Where Zapier Shines

•

Onboarding is nearly frictionless. You can build a working automation in your first 15 minutes.

•

It connects to over 7,000 apps—more than anyone else on this list.

•

The interface is linear and forgiving, which makes simple one-trigger-one-action flows effortless.

Where Zapier Falls Short

•

Pricing scales painfully. Once you exceed the free tier, costs climb fast, and high-volume stores get hit hardest.

•

Multi-step, branching logic is limited compared to Make and n8n. Complex workflows become clunky.

•

You pay per task, which means a busy store can rack up a surprisingly large monthly bill.

Who It's For

Zapier is best for absolute beginners who want to automate one or two simple tasks today and don't mind migrating later. If your store does low volume and your automations are straightforward, it's a fine starting point. Just know that most growing stores outgrow it within a year.

Make.com — The Sweet Spot for Most Ecommerce Stores

Make.com (formerly Integromat) is my default recommendation for the majority of ecommerce store owners, and it's the tool I reach for first in my own business. It hits the balance between power and usability better than either competitor.

Where Make Shines

•

The visual builder shows you exactly how data flows through every step, which makes debugging intuitive.

•

Branching, filtering, error handling, and loops are all first-class features, not afterthoughts.

•

Pricing is dramatically more generous than Zapier for high-volume stores. You get far more operations per dollar.

•

It handles complex, multi-step ecommerce workflows—like order routing, conditional supplier notifications, and multi-app syncs—with grace.

Where Make Falls Short

•

The learning curve is steeper than Zapier's. The visual canvas can feel overwhelming on day one.

•

The app library, while huge, is slightly smaller than Zapier's for niche tools.

Who It's For

Make.com is the right choice for most ecommerce stores that plan to grow. If you expect to build more than a couple of automations, if you need conditional logic, or if your order volume makes Zapier's pricing uncomfortable, Make is the tool that will scale with you without forcing a painful migration later.

n8n — The Power User's Choice

n8n is the wildcard of the three. It's a workflow automation tool that you can self-host, which makes it the most flexible and the most technical option on this list.

Where n8n Shines

•

Self-hosting means you can run unlimited workflows for essentially the cost of a small server.

•

It's the most customizable of the three—you can write custom code nodes when a visual step isn't enough.

•

For privacy-sensitive operations, self-hosting keeps your data entirely under your control.

•

The fair-code model keeps costs predictable for high-volume, complex operations.

Where n8n Falls Short

•

It requires technical comfort. Self-hosting means dealing with servers, updates, and maintenance.

•

The managed cloud version exists but is less polished than Make or Zapier's hosted experiences.

•

Support is community-driven, so when something breaks at 2 AM, you're largely on your own.

Who It's For

n8n is for technical founders, developers, and stores with someone on the team who can manage infrastructure. If you're comfortable with self-hosting and you want maximum control at minimum recurring cost, n8n is a serious tool. If the phrase 'spin up a Docker container' means nothing to you, pick Make instead.

Pricing at a Glance

Pricing changes constantly, so I'll keep this directional rather than quoting exact numbers that'll be stale by the time you read this.

•

Zapier: Free tier exists, but paid plans get expensive fast for active stores. Best for low volume.

•

Make.com: Free tier plus affordable paid plans with generous operation counts. Best value for growing stores.

•

n8n: Self-hosted is nearly free aside from server costs. Cloud version is competitively priced. Best for technical users who want control.

The rule of thumb: if your monthly automation bill would make you wince, you're probably on the wrong tool for your volume.

Ease of Use Ranked

If we rank pure ease of use from easiest to hardest, the order is clear.

•

1. Zapier — fastest to learn, simplest to build.

•

2. Make.com — moderate learning curve, far more rewarding once you're over it.

•

3. n8n — steepest curve, requires technical context.

Don't confuse ease of use with capability, though. The easiest tool is rarely the most powerful, and the most powerful tool is rarely the easiest. Pick based on where you are now and where you'll be in a year, not on which demo looked smoothest.

My Straight Recommendation

Here's the opinion you came for, based on 13+ years of real stores and hundreds of automations.

•

If you're an absolute beginner automating one simple task today: start with Zapier. You'll learn the mental model fast, and you can migrate to Make when you outgrow it.

•

If you're a growing ecommerce store building real workflows: pick Make.com. It's the tool that scales with you, handles complex logic, and won't punish your budget as your order volume climbs. This is my default recommendation for 90% of store owners.

•

If you're technical and want maximum control at minimum recurring cost: pick n8n and self-host. Just be honest with yourself about the maintenance burden.

The Tool Matters Less Than Starting

Here's the part most comparison articles won't tell you: the tool you pick matters far less than the fact that you start. A store owner who builds three simple Zapier automations this week will be miles ahead of the one who spends a month researching n8n versus Make and builds nothing.

Pick the tool that matches your current skill and store size, build your first automation in the next seven days, and let the results guide your next move. The best automation tool for your ecommerce store is the one you actually use.
